BIO
Sam Duquette is a Québécoise multidisciplinary artist based in Tiohtià:ke/ Mooniyang/ Montréal. In 2024, Sam received her BFA in Ceramics and Sculpture at Concordia University. She has also worked alongside the artist Nadia Myre in ceramic art research and development at the Kinawind research lab for over four years. With the collective Everything Already Present, she explores locally sourced earth materials and alternative ceramic techniques first encountered in 2022 during a residency at the Guldagergaard International Ceramic Research Center in Denmark. Her work has been shown at the Artch 2025 festival (Montréal), in an online exhibition with the Gardiner Museum (Toronto) for the International Ceramic Art Fair (ICAF) 2024, in group exhibitions at Art Mûr (Montréal), Eastern Bloc (Montréal), Jano Lapin gallery (Montréal) and other venues. She has also curated the show Solastalgie, presented at galerie Éclats in the Belgo (Montréal) in 2026 for the artist collective Everything Already Present. Her work is part of the Art Volt collection and held by several private collections.

ARTIST STATEMENT
Working at the intersection of craftsmanship, scientific inquiry, and archival processes, Sam engages with locally sourced, earth materials and experimental ceramic techniques. Her practice explores the relationship between materiality, archaeological heritage, and identity, with a particular focus on gender fluidity and her experience as a transfeminine person. Through her work, she confronts tensions and contradictions she often feels within a world that predominantly validates binary constructions of identity. Recent works investigate the use of laser engraving on ceramic canvases to archive memories of trans women who have shaped history. Using clay as a medium that embodies both temporality and permanence, she creates ceramic objects that reflect on the presence and continuity of queer identities in history. Through evolving techniques influenced by the encounters and discussions within her community and a multidisciplinary approach, her practice challenges binary constructions and celebrates the full spectrum of gender expression.
