Bio
Sam Duquette (she/they) is a transfeminine Québécoise-Canadian contemporary artist based in Tiohtià:ke/ Mooniyang/ Montréal. In 2024, Sam received her BFA in Ceramics and Sculpture at Concordia University. She has also been working alongside Nadia Myre in ceramic art research and development at the Kinawind research lab for the past three years. With the collective Everything Already Present, she explores locally sourced earth materials and alternative ceramic techniques first encountered in 2022 during a residency at the Guldagergaard International Ceramic Research Center in Denmark. Her work has been shown in an online exhibition with the Gardiner Museum (Toronto) for the International Ceramic Art Fair, in group exhibitions at Art Mûr (Montreal), Eastern Bloc (Montreal), Jano Lapin gallery (Montreal) and Espace Loulou (Montreal).

Sam Duquette (elle/iel) est une artiste contemporaine transféminine québécoise-canadienne basée à Tiohtià:ke/Mooniyang/Montréal. En 2024, Sam a obtenu son baccalauréat en céramique et sculpture à l'Université Concordia. Elle travaille également aux côtés de Nadia Myre dans la recherche et le développement d'art céramique au laboratoire de recherche Kinawind depuis trois ans. Avec le collectif Everything Already Present, elle explore les matériaux terrestres d'origine locale et les techniques céramiques alternatives expérimentées pour la première fois en 2022 lors d'une résidence au Danemark au Guldagergaard International Ceramic Research Center. Son travail a été présenté dans une exposition en ligne avec le Gardiner Museum (Toronto) dans le cadre du International Ceramic Art Fair, dans des expositions collectives à Art Mûr (Montréal), Eastern Bloc (Montréal), galerie Jano Lapin (Montréal) et Espace Loulou (Montréal).
Artist Statement
My artistic practice navigates the nexus of tradition and technology, delving into the materiality of the earth, gender fluidity, and archaeological heritage. It reflects my personal journey as a transfeminine person, drawing from diverse material explorations and spatial interventions to bring light to my experience. Through my work, I confront the tensions and contradictions I often feel within a world that predominantly validates binary constructions of identity. In response to the discomfort often felt by my community, I create art that celebrates the entire spectrum of gender identity and embodies fluidity. As a raw material, clay symbolize temporality and once fired into ceramic, it becomes legacy. Fossilizing earth materials into ceramic objects, that serve as contemporary artifacts, allows me to represent and celebrate trans identity throughout history. My techniques are in constant evolution, influenced by the encounters and discussions within my community, driving me to experiment across mediums and create at the intersection of craftmanship, scientific research and archival.
Démarche Artistique
Ma pratique navigue entre tradition et technologie, en explorant la matérialité de la terre, la fluidité des genres et le patrimoine archéologique. Elle reflète mon parcours personnel en tant que personne transféminine, en s’appuyant sur diverses explorations matérielles et interventions spatiales pour éclairer mon expérience. À travers mon travail, je confronte les tensions et les contradictions que je ressens souvent dans un monde qui valide principalement les constructions binaires de l’identité. En réponse au malaise souvent ressenti par ma communauté, je crée un art qui célèbre tout le spectre de l’identité de genre et incarne la fluidité. En tant que matière première, l’argile symbolise la temporalité et une fois cuite en céramique, elle devient un héritage. La fossilisation de matériaux terrestres en objets en céramique, qui servent d’artefacts contemporains, me permet de représenter et de célébrer l’identité trans à travers l’histoire. Mes techniques sont en constante évolution, influencées par les rencontres et les discussions au sein de ma communauté, ce qui me pousse à expérimenter différents médiums et à créer à l’intersection de l’artisanat, de la recherche scientifique et de l’archivage.
